Sandusky International manufactured this custom steel reel drum and bearing assembly for a US paper manufacturer. Using a combination of casting, turning, drilling, and tapping, we developed the part in accordance with our client's specifications as a replacement to their existing reel drum.
Working with centrifugally cast ASTM A27 Grade N-1, we cast the reel drum's shell, then rough turned and bore the shell before finish turning and polishing. We then drilled and tapped 20 holes at each end in preparation for the attachment of the new heads. Included in the steel reel drum and bearing assembly were several features, including venta grooving to eliminate entrained air. After assembly the reel drum was coated with tungsten carbide. We also included operation and maintenance manuals.
Our centrifugal casting method provided several unique benefits, including the shell being inherently cylindrical with concentric outside and inside diameters, and it eliminated the need for cold working or welding.
Upon completion, the steel reel drum and bearing assembly measured 48.00 inches in outside diameter, 302.00 inches in length, and 342.00 inches from centerline of the bearings. After inspecting and testing the reel drum to ensure it met all applicable standards, we packaged the assembly, and delivered it to our paper manufacturer client in the Southern US.
